MOTION PRO TRAIL TOOL + LEATHERMAN CRUNCH
Whenever I get this out on a ride everyone who hasn't got one asks "what on earth is that?". This happened more than once on this TET trip as the Motion Pro Trail Tool was used to tighten loose gear levers, remove seats and plastics, scrape mud and open beer bottles. I love mine. I've added a few sockets over the years specific to my bike - for example it has an 8mm socket included but it's too thick to get into the housing on a KTM EXC seat bolt. I opted for a Leatherman Crunch as I like the fact that it's a set of vice grips rather than simple pliers. Maybe I need to work on my hand strength! I keep all this gear in a Giant Loop Zig Zag Bag on my handlebars.
KRIEGA US-5 BAG & MOTION PRO TOOLS
I’m a big fan of the little Kriega US 5 bags. Really versatile little bits of kit. I kept my tool kit in one on the rear fender. It’s mounted via the Kriega haul loops. The only thing to point out is that the mount straps can have a tendency to slip down so I used some extra straps to prevent this from happening. I mounted it so that I could have easy access to tools without having to take the bag off which worked well for the various punctures / mechanicals on the trip. It was really quick and easy to get hold of levers etc.
No two trail rider’s tool kits are the same, it’s a very personal choice based on hours in the saddle, the bike you ride and the mechanicals you’ve had in the past. My kit is based on about 6 years of trail riding and the principle of ‘light is right’. Here's what's in my kit:
Spare inner (21)
cam strap/tow rope
split links x 2
